Formula Student involves roughly 150 Universities all working in small teams to build a small race car. That vehicle is then put to the test in a series of events over three days. The race cars they were building were either Petrol, Electric or Autonomous at this years’ event.
GKN Automotive are engaging with Oxford Brooks, Bath and Nottingham Universities,
supporting them and offering their wisdom when it comes to implementing electric
We arrived at the GKN Automotive Mira testing facility in early July 2019, about two weeks
before the main event at Silverstone. The Nottingham Team were on site, with their nearly-
built electric racing car. This team was going through their vehicle with a scrutineer, giving them some advice and guidance on their vehicle prior to the event, pointing out areas they may want to improve in order to gain maximum points.
We filmed some of the scrutineer and the students discussing the vehicle, with some wide-angle open shots of an entire group, as well as close ups on points of interest of the vehicle.
After this, team Bath arrived with a more complete looking vehicle. We wheeled out the
vehicle to make a nice background and interviewed about 8 students about their
involvement with Formula Student and GKN Automotive.
We also interviewed a Female Engineer, to attempt to create a nice narrative about the
importance of having more women in Engineering.
The next day, we then headed to GKN Automotive’s Innovation Centre in Abingdon. We
interviewed a few key figures here such as Gordon Day, who outlined what it is they do at
the site. They also had a young female apprentice on site, who we also interviewed, and we wove this story in with the female engineer from Team Nottingham. This created a nice overall piece about women in engineering.
We created five videos from the two days of shooting; an overview of the Abingdon site, a
piece on Women in Engineering, GKN Automotive’s work on developing the electric
drivetrain in the Jaguar I-Pace, GKN Automotive’s involvement in Formula Student and
finally a video on GKN Autmotive’s Skills Development Programme.
